The Thick of Thin Things
Somewhere in the past few days that phrase, "the thick of thin things" broke through the mental noise and sounded a wake-up call for me. It has given me pause think about how often I give away my power by getting wrapped around the axle of things that don't really matter much...in other words, the thick of thin things.
Maybe you can relate. As we race out of summer and into the fall, usually a very busy time of year, I invite you to take this time to stop and ask yourself if you too are getting caught up in the thick of thin things. Take some time this week to reflect and examine where you're spending your time and energy. Is it on the priorities you say are important (health, relationships, communication, balance, legacy goals) or is it getting caught up in the never-ending to-do list, much of which may be urgent but not all that important in the long run?
You've probably heard the metaphoric story of the university professor who was trying to impart to his students that powerful distinction between what is truly important and what only fills our time. He places several big rocks in a gallon jar and then asks his students if the jar is full. Most respond that it is, after which he proceeds to fill in the crevices between the large rocks with smaller and smaller pebbles, sand and finally water, filling the jar to overflowing. His point: If you don't put the big rocks in first there will be no room for them as your life rapidly fills and overflows with minutiae and activities that crowd out the big stuff.
So as you look at the remaining months of 2009 are you satisfied that you have made the most of your time so far? Do you see that you've put the big rocks in on a consistent basis or have you gotten caught up in the thick of thin things and find there is little or no time left for the true priorities?
There's still time, you know. Time to refocus on your top 3-4 priorities for 2009. Time to start right now living your values. Time to begin spending your precious life resources to create results that matter instead of simply crossing tasks off a to-do list, completing things that are tension relieving but not goal-achieving.
I invite you to take a deep breath, look at your calendar and decide now what big rocks you'll put in your jar first, starting today. Don't look back on one more day or month and have that sinking feeling you're caught up in the thick of thin things! Life is too precious. Make it count.

Quote of the Week
"Don't ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive."
