Follow Your Hunches
I know you've had this experience: You have a fleeting hunch to do something, call someone, take a particular route for no apparent reason. You ignore the hunch only to find out there was a very valid reason you were being subconsciously nudged to do or not do that particular thing.
Twice in the last couple of days I have had such hunches or "feelings." Friday, as I drove to a meeting, I had a very powerful urge to speak with a dear friend I have known for many years. Later, when I returned home she had called (at the very time I was thinking of her) to congratulate me on the publication of my book, which she had found in the public library! The next day, I was driving to the store when I had a strong urge to stop and say "hi" to a friend who owns a small business located in a strip mall near the store I was going to. I ignored the nudge only to discover when I arrived at the store, I had left my purse with ID, wallet, everything at home. Had I stopped to visit him, I would have discovered my missing purse and it would have been a shorter trip from his store back home to retrieve it...if only I had followed that hunch!
Now in both of these instances there were no dire consequences that resulted from ignoring or postponing my intuitive nudges. But that isn't always the case is it? I've spoken with friends and clients over the years who have shared the unfortunate results of times when they ignored their hunches. They've married the wrong person, taken a job that was not a good fit for their talents and temperament; hired someone in a business they had misgivings about. How about you? Are you picking up an intuitive nudge to do something today or this week that you would be wise to follow up on?
It could be a hunch to have a particular health test done. Perhaps your nudge is encouraging you to pick up the phone and call a friend, a relative or a prospective client you haven't spoken to in a while. Maybe it's as simple as taking a particular route to work that helps you avoid a time-wasting traffic delay, or something bigger like a hunch to investigate something that doesn't seem quite right or apply for a job at a company you have no "reason" to believe is hiring.
My point is this: our hunches are like little traffic signals that often guide us to greater good, or help us avoid some unfortunate event in life. We ignore them at our peril. And my two experiences this week have been a reminder that I want to strengthen my intuitive muscles.
I've made a conscious decision to do three things to cultivate my intuition, and I invite you to join me:
1) Pay attention when you get one of those intuitive nudges. Often they are very fleeting, and if we don't pay attention or acknowledge them, we miss the message they may be attempting to send us until after the fact.
2) Write them down. The act of writing down times when we've received an intuitive nudge and the results of following or not following them, is a way of encouraging our subconscious mind to keep sending us the signals.
3) Be open to the odd or unusual. Don't automatically dismiss such a nudge as foolishness. Be curious. Ask your subconscious what it might mean or why you're being nudged to follow a particular path; stay open rather than critical. Often such nudges may come in our dreams so following steps 1 and 2 above will help us become more conscious of those dream messages.
In doing a little research on the topic, I discovered an article written by a doctor (psychiatrist) who has cultivated intuition to use in conjunction with science and rational thought in treating patients. The writer noted that it is those intuitive flashes that often lead to a treatment or helping protocol that is simply not available through conventional approaches. I believe that is the case for all of us. Life is constantly seeking to show us a higher, better way to solve problems, achieve our goals and avoid difficulties.
Our task is to pay attention to those intuitive signals and follow where they lead. This week, follow your hunches and see what surprises are in store!

Quote of the Week:
"The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift."
~~Albert Einstein
