Word Power
You've most likely heard or even said the phrase, "words have power." I've certainly written about the power of words on occasion. But this past weekend I had one of those experiences that gave new meaning to that phrase.
I recently got a new digital camera and had just taken some photos I wanted to upload to my computer. But I was missing the USB cord I needed to plug it in to the computer. I immediately declared it "lost" and began turning my office inside out looking for it. The word "lost" kept running through my head. I envisioned the cord being inadvertently thrown away with the box and packaging (even though I had used it once before) and was set to email the company to find out how I might purchase a replacement. Regardless of how hard I searched, even going through a box of miscellaneous cords and plugs in hopes of finding it, my efforts failed to produce the missing cord.
As is often the case, I had to temporarily quit obsessing about it and move on to something else. Several hours later I went into our infamous "back room" (we all have them!) to do something else and lo and behold, there on a shelf I had already searched was the "lost" cord. I had to laugh at myself! And I was reminded of the amazing power of a word to produce an outcome in perfect alignment with itself. I had labeled the cord lost, and so it was indeed lost to me. Is it any wonder I couldn't find it? My "lost" mindset blinded me to what was in front of me the whole time.
What about you? What have you labeled as lost, unfixable, hopeless, sick or in some other limiting way? Do you realize that the word has now created your mindset about the situation or circumstance and through repetition, your mindset is producing the exact outcome your word has predicted? There's another old saying, that a mind is like a parachute; it has to be open to work! When we label ourselves, a situation, an event, occurrence or another person we have officially closed our minds to other possibilities.
This week as you think about your life, your work, the economy, a particular person or any other circumstance or condition, pay attention to the word labels you give those things. If the words you're choosing to describe them are limiting in any way, I invite you to choose again. At the very least, stop to ask yourself if there is another more empowering possibility that you might consider.
Remember, words do indeed have prophetic powers. They become sign posts pointing us toward a particular reality or outcome. Be conscious of how you're using words to create and reinforce the conditions in your life. We're blessed with a language that contains literally millions of words you can choose from; words that encourage, empower and open you to new possibilities or words that limit, block and restrict growth and opportunities.
Want to produce different results? Start by using different words.
Now go out and make it an amazing week!

Quote of the Week:
"Watch your thoughts for they become words.
Watch your words for they become actions.
Watch your actions for they become habits.
Watch your habits for they become character.
Watch your character for it becomes your destiny."
