Stay Focused and Find a Way

I have shared with you that I am a huge fan and regular practitioner of yoga. It is one of the most beneficial forms of exercise I know of, and I recommend it heartily. One of the reasons I feel so strongly about it is that its applications are not limited to the physical or mental benefits alone. Often I hear something in a yoga class that applies directly to what I am dealing with in life or business. In fact, the word "yoga" means unity so it's no surprise that it speaks to other areas of life as well.

Such was the case during a recent Sunday afternoon class with an amazing instructor named Stephanie. As she calmly led us through a series of warm ups, she advised us to stay focused during the class. "Don't allow yourself to become distracted by the intensity of a pose," she said. "Stay with it and find a way to make it work."

And although I didn't want to get distracted by what a perfect Monday Morning Coach message she had just given me, later on, I came back to her words. We all need to remember to stay focused and not let ourselves to become distracted by the dozens of things that threaten to pull us off center or onto someone else's agenda on a regular basis.

  • Are you trying to market yourself or your business but get discouraged every time you listen to a nightly newscast filled with doom, gloom and dire predictions? Major distraction.
  • Are you working to achieve a personal goal, like getting in shape or losing weight and keep falling prey to the distraction of "how hard it is", how "busy" you are, or the million and one advertisements for food? Time to refocus.
  • Have you set the intention to spend more wisely or save money but find yourself drooling over a four-color spread in some magazine or catalog, or succumbing to the tempting lure of discounts on stuff you want but don't need? Distraction.

I admit, it's tough not to get distracted by all of the distractions around us. But it can be done. And as Stephanie, the yoga instructor advised, "Stay focused, and find a way to make it work." So this week identify what you most want or need to accomplish and what's most likely to distract you, then find a way to work around it. If it means restructuring your day so that you miss that depressing newscast, do it. If it means unsubscribing to magazines or getting your name off of catalog lists, do it. If it means avoiding fast food restaurants and really sticking to the plans you made to bring your lunch or go to the gym right after work, do it. If you need some kind of support like a coach, accountability partner or a buddy to call when your resolve weaken, find that person.

Someone once said, you can have anything you want if you are willing to pay the price. Are you willing to do what it takes to make it work? Are you willing to "stay with the pose" and not become distracted? Are you willing to find a way through despite the distractions?

Make this the week to stay focused and find out just how far you can go.

Quote of the Week:

"The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want and if they can't find them, make them."

~~George Bernard Shaw
