Rekindle Your Dreams

We all have dreams...at least I hope we do! It's easy during times of distress, economic and otherwise, to turn the flame down, to cocoon and wait until the turmoil blows over. But something I've been reminded of lately is that unless I keep the passion and excitement of my dreams alive, the flame will go out. So this week I challenge you to dig down and ask yourself some questions about your dream or dreams.
- What dream are you ready to rekindle?
- How will you feed the flame to keep it alive?
- Who can you share your dreams with that will fan the flames with you?
It's easy for our dreams to get shelved...to sit so long unattended that the passion eventually seems to burn out. Or it gets choked out by the demands of making a living, supporting a family or other priorities that seem to have an urgency that overshadows the importance of our dreams. It doesn't have to be that way.
I recently learned that in medieval times, the way people kept a spark alive so they could start a fire was to carry a small box that contained an ember from a previous fire. Throughout the day, whoever carried the box, fed the ember small sticks, leaves and other bits of tinder to keep the flame burning. What a wonderful metaphor for our dreams!
This week, take a few minutes to reflect and ask what dream or dreams of yours have gone cold. Is it the dream of writing a book? Maybe you dream of a vacation to some far-off place, or redesigning your home to be more inviting, or even living in another place altogether. It could be a career dream you've set aside as too impractical. Maybe you've long-desired to return to school and pursue a degree or tap your creative side. Although it may seem as if the flame has gone out, if you still have a passion for it, then the dream is not dead. It may however need the equivalent of some of those twigs, leaves and tinder to reignite the flame.
Here are some strategies to rekindle the flame of your dream or dreams and get them burning brightly again:
- Write out your dream in detail. This is the equivalent of breathing on an ember and watching the flame leap back to life. The stories are plentiful of people who have done just this (written out their dreams) and manifested them in seemingly record time. But don't get hooked by deciding how fast you think the dream will take to manifest. Just write out a detailed description of your dream, and watch the flame of your passion take off. This year, two of my longest-held dreams have come to fruition (more in a future MMC).
- Create a plan for getting there. Attempting to fulfill a dream without having a realistic plan is a recipe for failure. Include a list of potential obstacles and your strategies for working around them. If necessary, get a coach to help you work through the plan and stay on track.
- Do something everyday to further the action on your dream. Action is the antidote to the fear and doubt that often plague us when we decide to pursue something new or unknown. Have something on your to-do list everyday that moves you closer to the dream. It's not the size of the "to do" that matters, it's the consistency of it.
- Hang around people who support your dream or are pursuing their own passions. Dreams rarely manifest in isolation. We need to be talking with other people who are going places, doing things and fulfilling their dreams alongside us. Mastermind groups provide the fertile environment for many people. Besides being very motivational, hanging around other people who are pursuing their passions will also give you someone to celebrate with when your dreams become reality!
- Learn to celebrate along the way. Your dream may be a bit like running a marathon (perhaps that is your dream). We all need cheerleaders along the way. Just ask anyone who has run a marathon how important the cheering section is to them in completing the race. For added motivation, remind yourself how far you've come, rather than constantly measuring progress against how far you have yet to go. And absolutely critical is to stop and celebrate when you reach a major milestone. Trite but true: success is not the destination but the journey.
- Dreamboards are another powerful way to bring your dreams to life. Find pictures that represent your dreams, that show people who are doing what you dream of, that inspire you to keep moving. We humans are motivated by what we see. By all means surround yourself with vivid pictures, imagery and symbols of what you want to achieve. Before long those predominant images will implant themselves and start bearing fruit.
Are you ready to rekindle your dream? Let this be the moment you recommit to it. Don't let another day slip by in "someday I'll" mode. As I've often reminded you (and myself) we only get now. Take the bold step of reconnecting and recommitting to your dream now...today...this instant. If you want to share it with me, I'd be proud to hold the vision for you. Now go ahead and get in action. As the philosopher once wrote: "Whatever you can or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it."

Quote of the Week:
"Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe."
