COACHES--THEY'RE EVERYWHERE!
Where can you find a good coach these days? Having been a full-time practicing life and business coach for over a decade, you might find it odd that I'm asking this question. Of course good coaches can be found from many resources: referrals, coaching schools, the internet to name a few.
But this week, I'm here to remind you that whether you use the services of a professional coach or not, coaches are around us, practically 24-7. They're everywhere if you simply learn to pay attention to the messages they bring. And while I certainly recognize (and recommend) the value of hiring a professional coach to help you see things more clearly and act more intentionally, in the past couple of weeks, I've had several experiences that reminded me to pay attention to the coaches that show up in my life on a regular basis.
Here are some examples of "life experience coaching" I've been blessed to receive from a variety of sources over the past couple of weeks:
- During a moment when I was feeling the loss of my mother very deeply, a friend was there to support me and remind me of what got her through the grief she experienced after losing her mother many years before. Not only did she allow me to fully feel what I was feeling at that moment, she helped me see that the depth of that emotion was also a reflection of how deeply it was possible for me to feel its opposite: joy.
- The recycling man who inspired me with his reminder of Earl Nightingale's timeless message that "we become what we think about". As a result I began listening to some of my favorite personal development programs again and paying more attention to the kind of thoughts I was feeding.
- A speaker last week, at a program I almost didn't attend, who posed this question: "How would the person I want to be do the things I need to do today?" This one single question, asked in a provocative way, prompted a shift that I am still benefiting from today.
- A zany yoga teacher whose Robin Williams-like yoga instruction made me laugh at my tendency to suffer from "seriousitis". I was reminded that laughter in life and yoga actually promotes flexibility...so lighten up!
- And, on more than one occasion recently I've been reminded that we leave a legacy in life, not by huge leaps and gigantic contributions, but by the simple daily acts of kindness and compassion each of us has ample opportunities to perform.
What about you? What kind of coaches has life brought your way in recent days or weeks? Have you been paying attention? Or has life had to get louder or more persistent for you to see or experience some truth you've been avoiding or a new perspective that might be beneficial? This week I invite you to "wake up and smell the coaching" that is coming your way. Remember that life is a school and as a wise person once said, "When the student is ready, the teacher appears." Will you be ready and waiting when your teacher arrives?
Quote of the Week:
"A man has made at least a start on discovering the meaning of human life when he plants shade trees under which he knows full well he will never sit."
