THE STRANGEST SECRET
As I rushed outside one morning to catch the recycling truck, I was caught
by surprise at the sound of the rich, resonant voice of Earl Nightengale, considered
the "dean" of personal development, coming from the speaker inside
the truck. Nightingale was and still is considered one of the world's foremost
personal development gurus; he founded the personal development company that
still bears his name: Nightingale Conant. The message was from Nightingale's
award-winning recording from more than 40 years ago titled "The Strangest
Secret." When I commented on it with an obvious note of recognition and
admiration, the driver flashed me a big smile and responded: "He's the
best."
Walking back into my house I was reminded once again that being
your best, applying the greatest wisdom of the ages, developing your character,
your brain power, your potential are not activities reserved for the rich and
famous. They are for everyone! Here, a humble recycling truck driver was listening
to one of the greatest personal development masters of the 20th century, with
the intention of taking his life to the next level. His example both humbled
and inspired me.
So my challenge for you this week is: What are you doing to keep
yourself mentally sharp, grow your potential, develop an enduring philosophy
that leads you to greater levels of achievement and satisfaction? What was the
last book you read that lifted you above the mundane or inspired you to reach
higher? When was the last time you listened to Nightingale's "The Strangest
Secret" or any of the hundreds of personal and professional development
programs available through his company today? When was the last time you attended
a training or retreat that gave you new information or a new perspective about
your life or a problem you're facing? Are you as consistent about exercising
your mind as you are your body?
If the recycling truck driver can use the time he has available
while picking up other people's trash to improve his life, what stops any of
the rest of us from making the most of our "down time?" By the way,
I believe it's okay for down time to be just that....time for reflecting, winding
down or just being with the silence. But too often we waste countless hours
listening to mindless mental junk food, talking on cell phones, worrying over
things we can't control. Or we're busy "waiting" until the right moment,
mood or message comes along to set goals or develop the plans to help us achieve
them. Why not dedicate at least 20-30 minutes a day for the next 30 days to
feeding your brain the kind of stuff that will help you reach more of your dreams
or goals to see what happens.
The core message of Nightingale's "The Strangest Secret" is this:
We become what we think about consistently. Our thoughts produce results consistent
with them. And while it may not be a secret; indeed many of us have heard the
message over and over during our lives, far too few of us remember to practice
consistently thinking about what we want to experience or create for ourselves
or contribute to the world.
I was reminded by the recycling truck driver that if I want to
produce a life of quality, contribution and success it will start with my very
next thought. I'm reminding you of the same timeless truth. The only question
now is what will you do with the knowledge and the reminder? I can't say it
any better than Nightingale himself:
"Start today. You have nothing to lose, but you have a life to win."
Quote of the Week:
"The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their
lives by altering their attitudes of mind."
~~William James
