Dear Monday Morning Coach Readers -- You'll notice a whole new look to Monday Morning Coach this week. And I'm also excited to announce that I have updated my website, featuring not only the new look but new content as well. Please take a moment to visit www.dynamic-coaching.com, and let me know what you think! The Fundamental Shift In the "Born Loser" comic strip for January 1, the character stands at the edge of echo canyon and shouts out "Happy New Year!" only to hear the echo return: "Same old, same old." Not a very uplifting prospect, to be sure. But if the truth be told, many of us, at least at an unconscious level, are living that paradigm. We stand on the precipice of a new year filled with possibilities but are anchored to the spot by our hidden "B.S."--belief systems, limiting paradigms and fundamental lies, and deep down, the fear that maybe this year will simply be more of the same.
When I get the time, or I don't have time."
This is one of the most popular of the self-limiting beliefs. I can even hear some of you saying it right now. "Betty, I will do what you're recommending when I have more time. Right now, I have to (fill in the blank with any handy time-based excuse)." There will always be stuff in your in-basket screaming for attention. The urgent will always seem to trump the important. But as the German philosopher Goethe once wrote: "The things that matter most must never be at the mercy of things that matter least." Make now THE TIME you stop majoring in minors and make the time for what matters most to you in this new year."I'm not ready or 'good enough' to take that bold step forward."
Do you think anyone who attempts something even the slightest bit risky is ever fully "ready" as in 100% sure it will work out? The truth is, when we take even a nano step forward to follow a dream or big goal, the learning and perfecting process begins. Imagine a surgeon who waits until they are "ready" as in no fear to do his or her first operation. Imagine a baby waiting until they're "ready" or "good enough" to take their first step. Imagine a great performer or athlete who waits until they have achieved perfection before putting themselves in front of an audience or into a competition. Let's face it, none of us is ever ready if ready means perfection, guaranteed success, no room for error. But guess what, we don't have to be perfect to take the first step. We do have to be willing to take it and learn what we need from the feedback we get along the way. Once again, Goethe said it so eloquently: "Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.""When 'they' or 'it' changes, then I'll start following that dream or working toward that goal."
This is the equivalent of waiting til the cows come home or the moon turns to green cheese. The more you anchor your own actions to the inactions of another, or a set of circumstances over which you have little or no control, the more stuck you remain. What changes would you make or steps would you take if "they" or "it" were fully supporting you? Even if you're not ready to bite off the whole enchilada, what tiny action would you be willing to take to get in motion? Don't let another's resistance or behavior be the "reason" you don't pursue your dreams!Other blockages to having an awesome, masterpiece of a year include:
I'm convinced that each of us was designed to live big, inspired lives; lives that make a difference to ourselves, others and ultimately the world around us. Are you ready to have that kind of year or will it be as the Born Loser fears, "same old, same old." The choice is yours. The time is now. The year is new. Carpe Diem!
Quote of the Week:
"As a single footstep will not make a path on the earth, so a single thought will not make a pathway in the mind. To make a deep physical path, we walk again and again. To make a deep mental path, we must think over and over the kind of thoughts we wish to dominate our lives."
