Unfinished Business for 2007
I probably don't need to remind you that the clock is ticking down on the final two weeks of 2007. There are 15 days left in the year, not a lot of time to be sure, but plenty of time to clear up at least some of your "unfinished business" for 2007. We all have unfinished business. It can run the gamut from a phone call or email you never followed up on, to a class you signed up for and never completed, a book you borrowed from someone and never returned, or something larger like closing a deal with a client. Regardless of the size of the tasks, I challenge you this week to get busy and tie up as many loose ends as possible before putting this year into your personal history book.
I know, it's easy to rationalize and excuse the last two weeks of the year with, "yes but, it's the holidays" or "I'll wait until January and start off by cleaning up those loose ends then." But remember this: we still have a choice about how to use each and every one of those 15 remaining days in this year. You may not be able to do everything, but you can do something to finish off 2007 with a bang instead of a whimper. And I encourage you to quit waiting to do what you can.
Start right now by doing a quick inventory of everything you can think of that is still unfinished for the year...large, medium and small. Just before I sat down to write this week's message, I made my list, and it came up surprisingly short, which was good news. But just writing the list had a very clarifying and empowering effect. It was easy to see which items really mattered and which in the short run were less important. Now, I can choose to focus on completing the things that mean the most to me. And in the process, I may just pick up enough momentum to tackle one or two of the bigger items that would feel great to cross off the list before December 31st.
Don't squander the last two weeks of this year by procrastinating on things that may be simple to address and finish. You may be just a phone call or meeting away from actually closing that big deal. But if you quit now with the old excuse, "well I can't do anything because of the holidays," there is one guarantee for sure: there's no possibility of closing that deal or completing that communication or returning the book or any of the other unfinished business on your list.
One of my favorite writers is Ekhart Tolle, author of "The Power of Now," and one of the most profound pieces of advice he shares is to "give up waiting." Think about the numbing effect "waiting until" has on your ability to clean up those incompletions for the year, and in fact on your whole life. I've already decided that one of my operating guidelines for 2008 will be: "quit waiting."
So, go ahead, quit waiting to finish up 2007 on a high note. Quit waiting to return that phone call or schedule that appointment. Quit waiting until a better time, because there will never be one. And when you turn the page of your calendar to January 1, imagine how great it will feel knowing you're not dragging 2007 along behind you!
This will be the last MMC of 2007, and I'd like to close by wishing each of you my wonderful readers a beautiful holiday season, whatever you celebrate, and a most wonderful new year. Now if you'll excuse me I have a few loose ends to tie up before the year is through.
Happy Holidays!
