WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG?

I recently hired a housecleaning service, after debating with myself for months about whether or not to do it. Several things have amazed me since making that decision. The first is that these two women can do in two hours what I couldn't (or wouldn't) do in a day or a weekend. More importantly though it has freed me up to spend weekends doing much more pleasurable things...things I never had time for before. And several times since making that decision, I've found myself asking: "What took you so long?" So long to make a decision that was long overdue....so long to make a decision to make your life more enjoyable....so long to decide to "hire the experts."

Oh, trust me I had all kinds of rationalizations for why I didn't take the step before: It would cost too much; I didn't want strangers in my home; I could do it myself...blah, blah, blah.

Now don't misunderstand me. This week's message is not about why you should hire a housecleaning service. This message is about your, "What took you so long?" issue. This message is a call to quit offering up excuses and rationalizations for not taking action on something you know is long overdue.

This message is a reminder that you really don't have "plenty of time" to pursue that dream, get in shape or have that crucial conversation with someone. What is it for you? You already know what it is because you've repeated the monologue in your head a thousand times:

  • I really should tell him/her how I feel.
  • I ought to start taking better care of myself.
  • I'd like to go back to school (write a book, change careers, etc.)...BUT
  • Someday I'll do X...
  • I've got plenty of time to do Y.

And for every opening line like those above, you've got a well-crafted speech consisting of all the reasons why you can't or haven't taken action on it. Whether it's something relatively minor like hiring a housecleaning service or something more potentially life-altering like pursuing a big goal, finally doing something about your health, finances or a crucial relationship, my question this week is: What's taking you so long? Are you willing to continue living on your reasons "why not?" Are you willing to let one more hour or day slip by without acting on that nagging something that needs to be handled sooner, not later?

I hope the answer is "No." No, I'm not willing to continue living on borrowed time and flimsy excuses. Today is the day...What took you so long?

Betty

Quote of the Week

"Everyone has inside of him a piece of good news. The good news is that you don't know how great you can be! How much you can love! What you can accomplish! And what your potential is."

Communication Tip #85*

Double- and triple-check for correct spelling of names. Nothing will get your correspondence tossed in the "round file' faster than misspelling the recipient's name.
