Getting Around To It

We’ve all uttered that flabby excuse that stops us from taking action.  You know the one: “when I get around to it.”  Funny thing is we rarely “get around to it.”  Because there are always 100 other things we let stand in the way.

I just read one of business guru Seth Godin’s brilliant blog posts on procrastination and the zillion or so ways we have of being “busy” but not productive.  Think Twitter, Facebook, forwarding chain emails, shuffling paper, lack of planning, feeding your fear or hanging around people who don’t support you.  All of these threaten to wreck our powerful intention to get results.

What are you up to this week?  What is keeping you “busy” but unproductive?  Are you ready to declare an end to the procrastination cycle and waiting to “get around to it?”

Here are three questions to ask yourself right now that will challenge you to quit dithering and start moving with intention toward the results you say you want:

  •  What one or two objectives am I absolutely committed to have happen today?  Remember we can’t always control outcomes but we can control actions that lead to predictable outcomes.  Example:  My objective may be to close a sale.  I don’t have 100% control over that, but I can control the number of prospecting and follow-up calls I make that will eventually lead to that outcome.
  • What one thing, if I stopped doing it, would add precious time to my day?  (I don’t mean eating, sleeping or any other necessary life function.)  Constantly checking email (I admit I’m guilty), “twittering” your time away or getting sucked into the endless loop of Facebook messages and postings that don’t produce a single result?  Stop it!
  • What thing, if I did just a little bit more of today would move me toward the results I want?  The slight edge in life and business goes to those who do a few things consistently better or just more consistently.  Don’t aim to do 100 things better today.  Pick the one or two that will really help you produce results and do them.  Now!

Bad news-good news report:

The bad news is you’ll never “get around to it” if you don’t know what “it” is (get clear) and don’t eliminate the self-imposed roadblocks to getting there (get honest).

The good news is you’re in the driver’s seat.  You decide whether you’re going to allow time-stealers or energy vampires to rob your most precious commodity or whether you’re going to use it to produce the results you want.

The choice is yours.  Now get going!
